5 reasons to wake up very early in the morning

Waking up very early in the morning is something that only a few people like. The reasons for it are mostly understandable: why getting out of bed when outside is cold and it still looks like night time? But if you have a purpose (or you’re forced) to do it, or simply you want to try the experience, here are some nice surprises that you’ll find in waking up before dawn.

First of all, this post needs 2 premises in order for you to get the best out of it.

  1. To be able to wake up very early without too much effort (4.30/5 am), it’s important that you get enough sleep. The whole plan of waking up early starts actually the night before going to bed early enough to be able to sleep at least 7 hours.
  2. In order to wake up so early, you’ll need to start doing physical actions right after your alarm goes off. Whether you go out for a walk, or you go to the train station, or you shower at home and prepare breakfast, make sure you’re doing active actions that wake you up. Better if you’re in a hurry! Otherwise the temptation of going back to bed or to a “surrogate” (couch or similar) might be too strong.

    And now, let’s have a look at some of the surprises that waking up at dawn has in store for you.

  • The sound of silence. One of the most surprising sensations of the early hours is the silence around. Even in big cities, noises are down to the minimum right before dawn. So if you’re able to go out and walk around, you’ll get absorbed and inspired by this quiet atmosphere. It’s the ideal environment to meditate and let your thoughts run free. The silence has also a strong influence on people: most people you’ll meet at those times, on buses, trains or in the street, will be silent and slowly getting ready for the day ahead. Quiet people create a quiet environment.
  • Sense of uniqueness. Not everyone is around so early in the morning. The ones who are, usually have a strong purpose to be there. Be one of them! Wake up early to get 2-3 extra hours for yourself, and dedicate this time to your passions or to exercise. The more you’ll get into this rhythm, the more you’ll find that dawn is a very special moment to live, especially when you’re fully rested. Let yourself be inspired and energized and move towards your purpose, whether work, school or passion from the very start of the day.
  • A gradual start to the day. Because most of the world is still asleep before dawn, even if you’re in a hurry you’ll experience a gradual start in your day. Even if you hold a shift-based job where you start very early in the morning, you’ll see a transition in the first hours of the new day, when the people who worked the nightshift start to go home, being replaced by the ones who are going to spend the morning at work. This rhythm follows entirely the gradual process of awakening of our society. So there’s no reason to rush, especially so early in the morning: the world is going to wait!
  • Your day is shorter and/or richer. If you woke up early, you’ll have started your tasks several hours before the others. This means, you’re going to be free significantly earlier that someone who woke up 4 hours later than you. So once you go through the morning, your day (especially your working day) is going to be a lot shorter. Here comes the best part: you now have a great choice. You can decide to go home and simply relax and get some sleep. Or, you can briefly relax and then spending some time for your passions and your personal goals. You’ve already “worked”, now you’re free to work for yourself! And you still have half of the day to go.
  • You are following a natural order. By repeatedly waking up and going to bed early, you’ll soon realize how your body will benefit from a lifestyle that follows a natural order. You’ll have an early slow start of the day around 5 to then be completely awake around 11 am. Later in the afternoon, if you can find 30 mins or so to relax, you’ll find yourself energized enough to go on with your activities until 7-8 pm. It’s a long productive day and it’s not going to make you more tired than what you normally are! You’re just spending your energies at natural times for your metabolism. There’s a lot to discover in the early morning, both about the world around and about ourselves. Good luck!

Some suggestions for a great weekend

The weekend is here! Let’s celebrate it by using our free time at its best. Here are some quick hints on how to get the best out of our weekend, in order to use all our free time in a creative and productive way. Get inspired by this list, and don’t forget to create your schedule for the weekend focusing on relax, creativity and recreation. Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Wake up slightly later compared to your weekdays, so you get some extra rest
  2. Take time for a long and healthy breakfast
  3. Go for a walk in the neighbourhood and enjoy the light of the day for at least 30/40 minutes
  4. Make a quick list of all the urgent tasks you have to deal with, and decide when you’re going to take care of them
  5. Take time to talk to your friends and answer some personal messages you left behind during the week
  6. Make a list of 3 things you want to “work on” during the weekend and reserve 1-2 hours for each task during the weekend
  7. Engage in at least 1 social activity per free day (i.e., sports, going out with friends)
  8. Take 30 mins to evaluate the past week: what worked, what didn’t, what you could have done differently
  9. Take 1-2 hours to deliberately take care of yourself: relax at home, go shopping or spend time exclusively on yourself
  10. Write a short letter to yourself about how you feel at the moment and what you want to accomplish in the near future
  11. Reconnect with some relatives or think back to some happy times in the past you didn’t think about for a long time
  12. Read a book for 1-2 hours every day. Better if a real book so you stay away from your computer for a while
  13. Eat healthy and don’t abuse alcohol/drugs “because it’s weekend”. Otherwise you’ll spend most of your time simply recovering
  14. Towards the end of the weekend, make a short activity plan for next week, so you won’t feel overwhelmed tomorrow
